FUNGAI MWAROWA
Biography
|
Fungayi was born in 1968 in Chimanimani and learned sculpting as an apprentice to the now late Joram Mariga, the “Father of Zimbabwean Stone Sculpture”. He works on hard stones and realizes possibilities for stone sculpture in the purple lepidiolite, the green verdite, the multi faceted leopard rock and the red granite, called red jasper. His subject matter is often animals like frogs, chameleons, birds and reptiles; or taken from tradition, like “Woman Possessed by Rhino Spirit”. Fungayi Mwarowa has a great pedagogical talent, besides the artist’s; which he recently proved through a 6 weeks’ visit to as many schools in Europe, where he taught teenagers to make sculptures out of stones. In this way he personalized the very concept of Friends Forever – the direct connection between African professional artists and any audience in Europe and the Western World at large.
