Antony Makurirofa comes from the Southern part of Zimbabwe, the Masvingo Province, where he attended the Serima Mission School and learned to make carvings in wood for the school buildings, just as 1stgeneration master sculptor Nicholas Mukomberanwa did before him. Later, in 1992, he came to Tengenge, where Tom Blomefield introduced him to carving in stone. Antony creates very beautiful portraits and human figures, some quite small end delicate, others tall and impressive, always with fine features of the face. He also creates persons for instance at work or on the road carrying fire wood. Another type of his sculptures is carved pictures, so-called bas-reliefs with a story, often taken from the Christian Bible, such as “Madonna” or "Visitor From The East". |
